Professional race skaters and recreation skaters alike
will be gathering in Putrajaya this August for the first
ever Asianic Inline Cup in Malaysia.
Participants from all over the region —
China, New Zealand, Korean, Japan, Indonesia,
Singapore, Malaysia — as well as Europe
are expected for this inaugural leg.
Current world overall track champion and
two-time world champion Nicole Begg, from
New Zealand, will be present, both to compete
and to run a coaching clinic on July 30, together
with her father, renowned international skating
coach Bill Begg.
Other top names include Eri Marina Yo, the
Indonesian 2009 Marathon Champion and overall
leader of the AIC; Sylvia Setiawan, the 2008
Indonesian Ladies champion; and Dimas Prasetya,
the Men’s 2009 Indonesian Marathon champion.
The professional skaters will compete in
a 42km Marathon (men, women, boy, girl and
Master categories) as well as a 500m sprint,
whereas recreational skaters can take part
in the 10km race as well as the 5km fun skate.
Visitors will experience the excitement of a world-class
skate competition, watch free style skating demos, shoot
a hockey puck into the net and even try skating for free.
Malaysia’s own Team Underdogs will also be giving
inline hockey demonstrations, and there’s even a
Skate vs Bike 100m Sprint Duel.
Other legs of the AIC are held in China, Singapore and
Indonesia, with more countries joining in the near future.
Inline speed skating will be included as an official
medal sport in next year’s Asian Games in Guangzhou.
Inline speed skating is also one of the seven short-listed
sports vying for a place in the 2016 Olympics.
